NEAR FIELD PROBE SETS FOR EMI / EMC TESTING

Model PS-400 and PS-500

Find the radiated emi emission source

A typical emi emission is test conducted using a broadband EMC antennas in the far field such as biconical, log periodics and horns. Usually at 1, 3 or 10 meter distance. If the product's emissions levels are above the levels set by test standard, the cause of the emission must be identified by the test engineer. The near field probes are used to find source of the emission at circuit level of the product. A typical EMC antenna is physically too large to make these measurements. The small hand held near field probes included in the PS-400 and PS-500 probes sets will allow test engineer to probe hard reach areas of the product.

The model PS-400 sets consists of two E-Field probes and a H-Field Loop probe. One of the two E-field probes is patented.  It has a fine tip that allows noise measurement of pins on ICs and traces as narrow as 3 mils on a printed circuit board. The other E-field stub probe is used to find the vicinity of the highest emissions levels on the board. Once the approximate location of the possible emission sources of is detected using the stub probe, the fine tip probe can assist the test engineer to pinpoint the exact circuit that is radiating the noisy signal.

In addition to the probes included in the PS-400 probe set, the PS-500 near field probe set includes a probe with a fine metal tip that allows contact with circuit being probed to measure levels directly on the trace.

The H-Field Loop probe allows detection of magnetic noise emanating from chassis seams, ribbon cables and connector pins.

Using the probes the test enigineer can quickly find and suppress the EMI at the source, before resorting to other means of EMI suppression. T

Preamplifier model PAP-501 for the near field probe set

The probes set can be purchased with the optional model PAP-501 RF Preamplifier with 20 dB nominal gain from 10 MHz - 1000 MHz. The preamplifier improves sensitivity of the spectrum analyzer to low amplitude signals picked up by the near field probes.
