AM-741R is an active monopole antenna for EMI testing from 9 kHz to 30 MHz

AM-741R Active Monopole Antenna

The AM-741R is designed for radiated emissions testing below 30 MHz and includes:

  • Telescoping rod: Adjustable from 23 cm to 105 cm (approx. 41 inches for compliance with most standards)

  • Low-noise preamplifier: Enhances signal sensitivity and SNR

  • Power Indicators: RF ON/OFF, battery low, amplifier saturation, and charging status

  • Mounting: 1/4"-20 threaded hole for tripod mounting (compatible with Com-Power AT-220)

Applications

Compliance with standards such as:

  • MIL-STD-461 (RE102)
  • RTCA DO-160 (Section 21)

  • CISPR 25 (Automotive)

  • Other sub-30 MHz emission tests

Grounding & Installation

  • Standard Grounding: Counterpoise must be bonded to the ground plane where the EUT is installed

  • MIL-STD 461 Grounding:

    • Output cable shield must be grounded via metallic bracket

    • Ferrite (20–30Ω @ 20 MHz) must be centered between bracket and antenna

    • Optional AMS-741 Grounding Kit available, includes:

      • Ferrite-fitted cable

      • Grounding bracket

      • Elbow adapter

Features

  • Low-frequency E-field measurements — designed for radiated emissions testing across 9 kHz to 30 MHz, with usable performance up to 60 MHz, addressing the band where dipoles and biconicals are impractical.
  • Telescoping rod element — removable, adjustable from 23 cm to 105 cm to support both the 104 cm rod height required by MIL-STD-461 and DO-160, and shorter rod lengths for special applications.
  • High-input-impedance matching network — built-in matching network handles the high source impedance of the short rod element and converts it to a 50 Ω output for direct connection to spectrum analyzers and EMI receivers.
  • Integrated low-noise preamplifier — preamplifier gain is included in the antenna factor, so no separate gain correction is required during measurement post-processing.
  • Wide dynamic range — 103 dB at 1 MHz (1 kHz bandwidth), enabling measurement of weak emissions and strong fields without compressing the receive chain.
  • Battery-powered with rechargeable NiMH pack — 6 VDC NiMH battery delivers 10–12 hours per charge, isolating the measurement from power-line ground loops; supplied charger doubles as an AC power adapter.
  • Front-panel diagnostic indicators — dedicated LEDs for power, RF on/off, battery low, amplifier saturation, charging status, and remote-link state.
  • Optional fiber-optic remote interface — pairs with the Com-Power RAI-100 to enable/disable the RF circuit and monitor saturation and battery status remotely — essential for shielded chamber operation where the operator cannot access the antenna during the test.
  • MIL-STD-461 grounding compatibility — supports the latest MIL-STD-461 grounding arrangement (cable-shield grounding via a metallic bracket and ferrite) using the optional AMS-741 Grounding Kit, as well as the “classic” counterpoise-bonded arrangement of older revisions.
  • ECSM calibration method — calibrated using the Equivalent Capacitance Substitution Method per ANSI C63.4, SAE ARP-958, and CISPR 16-1-4, with a 10 pF capacitor substituting for the rod to provide repeatable, traceable measurements.
  • Standard tripod mounting — 1/4"-20 threaded hole on the bottom of the amplifier housing for tripod or mast mounting; compatible with the Com-Power AT-220 Tripod.
  • NIST-traceable calibration included — individually calibrated; calibration data and certificate ship with every unit; ISO 17025 accredited calibration available on request.
  • Three-year standard warranty — backed by manufacturer support.
